august clothing

August is a time to slowly transition your closet from summer to fall. Lucky for us that San Diego fall means we can still wear our favorite shorts and tank but we can add our favorite new fall cardigan or kimono for a little extra layering. A new season doesn’t mean brand new wardrobe…fall simply reminds us to add a couple of warmer essentials like a great pair of pants, jeans, an oversized sweater, or everyone’s favorite…a great pair of BOOTS!! Because I’m a huge fan of layering, fall is the perfect time of year wear I can experiment with pairing all different types of patterns and materials into one look.

Don’t forget to visit one of our locations for weekly arrivals.

vintage cakes

We love following our blog contributor and photographer on Instagram @coreyvillicana…one of my favorite posts are her made from scratch cakes from the cookbook Vintage Cakes by Julie Richardson (found it at Anthropologie). The book itself is so easy to follow, even for a novice cook, great step by step direction and beautiful pictures that make the recipes so hard to resist.

My favorite desserts are ones with alcohol in them so I thought that the Kentucky Bourbon cake would be a great one to make for my first attempt at a made from scratch cake. A few tips Corey and I discovered is that you don’t need a sifter, an electric mixer, or real buttermilk. Anytime I find tricks that requires less dishes to wash…I’m all for it! Because I didn’t find real buttermilk at the grocery store, I looked up ways I could substitute it, a difficult process since I didn’t even know what real buttermilk tasted like. A source I found called for 1 tablespoon of vinegar and 1 cup of whole milk, it was a risk but it worked!! By mixing the vinegar and milk together, the consistency began to thicken which is what you want. As you get all the ingredients together, you do want to separate the dry ingredients from the wet…combine the 2 sets of ingredients into a bowl and begin mixing them together. Bake it for about 40 minutes and you’ll have a delicious cake ready to serve or decorate.

Decorating doesn’t need to be stressful and doesn’t require much at all. I decided to visit my local Whole Foods and see what was in season to top my cake. I was so lucky and thrilled to find that figs were available and in season. How could I resist the gorgeous colors? Adding a variety of sizes of the figs…whole, halves, and quarters and mini apples from Corey’s garden, the cake couldn’t have turned out more beautiful and more delicious. Hope you enjoy!

family

so thrilled with our family photos that I wanted to share a few of my favorites with you. Loved how these images captured real moments of us being as normal as we could be at the beach. Going through the images, I loved how the images truly showed the real dynamic of our family.

The funny thing about this day and even weeks leading up to the shoot was the natural stresses any mom goes through when trying to get ready for a family shoot…the coordinating outfit, hair, shoes stress and the jitters you get, hoping that your kids are going to cooperate just so that you can get that ONE picture….of course the stress was all worth it and I couldn’t be happier.

A huge thank you to our dear friend photographer, Corey Villicana. To see more from our family photo shoot, please follow THIS link.

Summer Vegetarian Lunch

1''For this post, I wanted to share a summer vegetarian lunch you can prepare in about 30 min. Inspired by a lunch my cousin Daniel prepared for our family, I wanted to replicate his simple and healthy meal. The main dish requires between 4-6 ingredients and can all be added to one deep pan.

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon of garlic paste

1 package of firm tofu

1 cup of Trader Joe’s Soyaki Sauce

1 package of frozen stir-fry vegetables

1 pinch of chili flakes (optional)

1 tablespoon of sesame seed oil (optional)

IMG_23503'IMG_2371Directions:

Add the frozen vegetables, tofu, garlic, and Soyaki Sauce all together in one deep pan. Stir all the ingredients gently together so that the tofu doesn’t break. Because the sauce has a lot of flavor, you don’t have to add sesame oil, but if you like the flavor of it, add a little for taste. I also like adding a pinch chili flakes for a little heat. Cover the pan for about 10 min. and your dish is ready to eat. You can eat it alone or on a bed of white or brown rice.

2''Kale salad

Ingredients:

Kale salad mix at your local grocery store

Girard’s Champagne Dressing

Directions:

To get rid of the bitter taste of kale, Daniel suggests to mush the dressing into the kale mix with your hands. Mushing it helps coat the kale with more acidity to help get rid of the bitter taste. Put as much or as little dressing you would like and in less than 5 min, you have a tasty kale salad that requires only 2 ingredients.

This meal has definitely been a favorite in our home! Being a busy mom, a can truly appreciate how fast, easy, and healthy this meal is. Thanks Daniel for sharing this recipe with us ❤
